Keeping your kitchen on trend

Everyone knows that time and tide wait for no man, but you can definitely also add fashion to that list.

Trying to keep up to date with what’s hot and what’s not has never been more testing, so we’ve put together a short guide to give you some clues on how to get your kitchen worthy for the catwalk:

Colours

Everything goes in cycles, and nothing more so than colour schemes for the home. Just finished painting your walls beige to fit in with the neutral noughties? It may be time to think again, because big, bold colours with bags of personality are back in fashion. Also, with the shades around us contributing so much to how we feel, why would you settle for anything half-hearted?

Kitchens are meant to be a place full of flavour and zest, so think about reflecting your food in your colour schemes, with striking reds and dazzling aquamarines particularly en vogue at the moment. Just be careful not to go too Laurence Llewelyn-Bowen with your choices.

Old-fashioned appliances

Remember how we said that fashions go in cycles? The same applies to appliances too, and rustic, bygone-age fittings are right back in style, giving kitchens everywhere a homely vintage look. We’re not suggesting that you go back to cooking over an open fire though. Companies in every store are now selling modern, up-to-date appliances with old-school styling, giving you the best of both worlds.

So modern-range cookers can now come with both the irreplaceable gas stoves as well as energy-efficient electric ovens, and a return to vintage style means the reappearance of vintage colours, helping you to fit more vibrant shades in your kitchen.

Compact appliances

While we stick by what we said about big vintage appliances being all the rage at the moment, the other end of the spectrum is the new trend to max out your kitchen space by looking at small, compact appliances.

Modern technology now offers you the option to have a half-capacity dishwasher, or a combined washing machine and dryer all in one. With space at a premium in so many kitchens these days, every square inch has to be fought for tooth and nail.

Our favourite idea of the lot? Combine all the concepts above and look at modern mini-ranges, which can bring a homely feel to even the smallest of spaces. What more could you ask for?
